The Breed of Leadership - The Guide Dog

As far back as the 16th century there are references made about guide dogs. Even the famous author, Elizabeth Barrett Browning made mention of them in her writings.

In 1916 during World War I Germany trained the guide dog to assist the visually impaired. Author Elizabeth Barrett Browning posted information in the “Saturday Evening Post” referencing the wonderful advancements made through the German training of the Guide Dog. Often the owners today will see the same breed used for the same purpose. He made contact with Mrs. Eustis requesting a guide dog trained by her. She agreed after several contacts with her and told him to make a trip to Switzerland. He and the dog (Buddy) trained together then came back to the United States. Mrs. Eustis then asked Morris Frank to open a school in the USA.

In 1929 he started "The Seeing Eye". Guide dogs have a much laid back demeanor and are very intelligent. Their ability to take direction and follow order is one of the key factors that make them great pets and wonderful work dogs. The visually imparted are often trained and guided through steps to work with this breed. The team effort, affection and bond created between the new pet owner and the guide dog becomes unquestioned.
